1. University Facilities and International Connections:
Istanbul University is an established institution recognized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) as one of the 20 research universities in Turkey, receiving support in this area and ranking highly worldwide. The university has direct agreements with 147 countries, and we are extending these agreements to our newly opened department. We already offer extensive opportunities for international experiences (such as internships abroad and the possibility of studying abroad for one or two semesters, depending on the conditions). Being in a city like Istanbul provides significant advantages for advancing in the field of informatics, and offering 100% English education is a considerable plus in our sector. Given the department's industry collaborations, students can quickly establish industry connections, have opportunities for academic advancement and involvement in projects, and find job opportunities while studying. Additionally, with over 300 active student clubs and hundreds of active companies in Istanbul University's Technopark, students can easily access both social and professional experiences.
2. Faculty's Physical Facilities:
Our faculty has temporarily been assigned one of the existing university buildings located in Beyazıt, near the main campus. We are renovating this building from top to bottom; work on classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, and other physical conditions has been ongoing for two months. Currently, the classrooms, smart boards, projectors, meeting rooms, and faculty offices are complete. The physical facilities for the computer laboratory have been prepared, and computer acquisitions are planned to be ready by the start of the semester. In summary, everything will be ready by the time education begins.
3. Will the Department be 100% in English and Have a Preparatory School?
Yes, at the beginning of the term, students scoring 70 or above out of 100 or an equivalent score can directly start their faculty courses. It can be stated that English proficiency at the B1 level is sufficient and necessary. Additionally, in the first year of the computer engineering curriculum, a professional English course is included to enhance presentation and writing skills and adaptation to technical terms. Our students can skip the preparatory year and start their courses, pass the midterm exam and irregularly join the faculty in the 2024 spring term, or pass the end-of-year exams and start in the 2024 fall term. Even if only one student passes the preparatory year, all faculty courses will be offered, and our students will be able to attend classes.
4. Is it Possible to Study the Program Remotely?
No, the education is formal, and most courses require 70% attendance, or 80% for practical sessions.
5. Are There Master's and Ph.D. Programs?
By early 2024, applications for two master's programs (one with thesis and one without) and a Ph.D. program will be made, and it is highly likely that student admissions will begin in 2024.
6. Are the Programs Accredited?
MÜDEK, an international accreditation body, accredits engineering programs in Turkey, requiring the condition of graduating students for application. Accreditation generally aims to improve the quality of education and standardize courses through documentation. Therefore, the relevant documentation will be meticulously followed from the first year, but applications will be made in the year the first graduates are produced.
7. Are There Internship Opportunities or Mandatory Internships?
Considering the quality computer engineering education in Istanbul and the active academic staff involved in university-industry collaboration, we can say that most of our students have a high chance of finding jobs before internships. However, to counteract the possibility of not finding a job, there is an internship program at the end of the second and third years. Students can receive support for internships abroad through Erasmus, find internships in fields such as banking, telecommunications, and transportation through the industrial advisory board we established, or find internships at companies of their choice.
